We Sydneysiders are truly blessed when it comes to experiencing the best of Asia – it’s on our doorstep after all. But choosing lunch isn’t that easy. Enter Takara. Words by Ryan Auberson-Walsh

Walking down Sydney CBD’s spine, there’s an abundance of restaurants to dine in – Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese to name a few. But George St, much alike many neighbouring urban villages (shoutout to Cabramatta and Ashfield) is so full of Asian flavour that it can be super difficult to know if your tastebuds will get it right.

Just off the busy thoroughfare in growing Haymarket, Chinatown’s dense foodie hub, Takara Japanese Dining is among the newest of lunch stops that has setup shop to alleviate the pain of going hungry wandering down struggle street.

Japanese food is at the top of Australia’s favourite dining experiences. An easy – and healthy – avocado roll for lunch, or a more adventurous tonkatsu at dinnertime, there’s always a new flavour to be tasted and another meal to tuck into with pals.

Takara has the best appeal for customers from every background. Open lunch and dinner, the kitchen dishes up some of the tastiest (and cheapest) selections of Japanese cuisine in Sydney – perfect for hungry university students and any struggling actors/musicians/artists/anyone who pays rent in Australia.

Come lunchtime and you can score yourself a super sweet deal – $10 bento boxes, of which the chicken karaage and teriyaki salmon are both exquisite. Delectable dishes from plate to mouth, they come with edamame, boiled rice, spiced ginger, a green salad and the best tofu you’ll ever swallow.

Keen locals have been raving about the chicken wings – served with a specially made sauce – and definitely on the list of things to try (which currently includes everything on the menu; ramen through to dessert). Though some UTS students who frequent the establishment have been raving about one more thing come dinnertime – it’s BYO.

Now to go pick up a cheap bottle of wine at the nearby grocery store and swig back some sake with the sushi.
